Zirconium and Zirconium Alloys Polyurethane Insulated Pressure Vessels

Zirconium polyurethane insulated pressure vessels combine the exceptional acid corrosion resistance of zirconium with the thermal efficiency of polyurethane foam insulation. These vessels are fabricated from reactor-grade zirconium alloys for applications requiring superior resistance to sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and other aggressive chemical environments.

Why Choose Zirconium and Zirconium Alloys for Polyurethane Insulated Pressure Vessels?

Zirconium is essential for highly corrosive acid service where other materials, including nickel alloys and titanium, experience unacceptable corrosion rates. Its exceptional resistance to hot sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid makes zirconium the material of choice for the most demanding acid processing applications.

Zirconium and Zirconium Alloys Polyurethane Insulated Pressure Vessel Applications

Common applications include:

  • Sulfuric acid concentration
  • Hydrochloric acid processing
  • Acetic acid production
  • Urea processing
  • Phosphoric acid service
  • Mixed acid environments

Zirconium and Zirconium Alloys Polyurethane Insulated Pressure Vessel FAQs

What acid concentrations and temperatures can zirconium handle?

Zirconium provides excellent resistance to sulfuric acid at all concentrations up to boiling temperatures, and to hydrochloric acid up to 37% concentration. It resists boiling 70% sulfuric acid where other metals fail completely. Specific corrosion rates depend on acid purity, temperature, and the presence of oxidizers.

What are the fabrication requirements for zirconium vessels?

Zirconium requires inert gas shielding during welding and stringent cleanliness to prevent contamination. All tooling must be dedicated to zirconium. Stress relief may be required after cold forming. Our fabricators are experienced with the special procedures required for successful zirconium construction.

How does zirconium compare to other materials for acid service?

Zirconium outperforms nickel alloys and titanium in many acid environments, particularly hot concentrated sulfuric acid. While material cost is higher, the exceptional corrosion resistance often provides superior economics through longer service life and reduced maintenance. Clad construction reduces cost for larger vessels.
