Zirconium and Zirconium Alloys Jacketed Insulated Pressure Vessels

Zirconium jacketed insulated pressure vessels combine the exceptional acid corrosion resistance of zirconium with integrated heating/cooling jackets and thermal insulation. These vessels are fabricated from reactor-grade zirconium alloys for the most demanding acid processing applications where other materials experience unacceptable corrosion.

Why Choose Zirconium and Zirconium Alloys for Jacketed Insulated Pressure Vessels?

Zirconium is essential for jacketed vessels handling highly corrosive acid environments where other materials, including nickel alloys and titanium, cannot perform. Its exceptional resistance to hot sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and mixed acid environments makes zirconium the material of choice for the most aggressive acid processing applications.

Zirconium and Zirconium Alloys Jacketed Insulated Pressure Vessel Applications

Common applications include:

  • Sulfuric acid concentration
  • Hydrochloric acid processing
  • Mixed acid environments
  • Acetic acid production
  • Urea processing
  • Phosphoric acid service

Zirconium and Zirconium Alloys Jacketed Insulated Pressure Vessel FAQs

What acid environments can zirconium handle?

Zirconium provides excellent resistance to sulfuric acid at all concentrations up to boiling temperatures, hydrochloric acid up to 37% concentration, and phosphoric acid at elevated temperatures. It resists boiling 70% sulfuric acid where other metals fail. Specific corrosion rates depend on acid purity and temperature.

Is zirconium cost-effective for pressure vessels?

Despite higher material cost, zirconium can be cost-effective due to exceptional corrosion resistance eliminating maintenance and replacement costs. For aggressive acid service, zirconium vessels often provide superior long-term value through extended service life. Clad construction (zirconium on steel backing) reduces cost for larger vessels.

What fabrication considerations apply to zirconium?

Zirconium requires inert gas shielding during welding and stringent cleanliness to prevent contamination. All tooling must be dedicated to zirconium. Stress relief may be required after cold forming. Our fabricators have the specialized experience required for successful zirconium vessel construction.
