Thermal insulated pressure vessels for cryogenic applications are specialized containers designed for extremely low-temperature service while maintaining thermal efficiency through advanced insulation systems. These vessels utilize insulation technologies specifically engineered for cryogenic temperatures, including vacuum systems, multi-layer insulation, and perlite-filled annular spaces.
Cryogenic applications present unique insulation challenges due to extreme temperature differentials (often exceeding 400°F) between vessel contents and ambient conditions. Specialized insulation systems minimize heat leak that causes product boil-off, maintain safe external temperatures, and ensure economical storage of valuable cryogenic liquids including LNG, nitrogen, oxygen, and helium.

Roben, Mfg, Inc. manufactures various thermal insulated pressure vessel types for cryogenics applications:
Common insulation materials used in cryogenics include:
Our thermal insulated pressure vessels are designed and manufactured in accordance with stringent industry standards:
Cryogenic vessels typically use vacuum-jacketed construction with perlite or multi-layer insulation (MLI) in the evacuated annular space. Larger atmospheric tanks may use polyurethane foam or perlite in non-evacuated configurations. Insulation selection depends on vessel size, cryogen type, and acceptable boil-off rates.
Vacuum eliminates convective heat transfer and dramatically reduces conductive heat transfer through gas molecules. Evacuated insulation systems achieve thermal performance 5-10 times better than atmospheric insulation. This reduction in heat leak is essential for economical storage of cryogenic liquids with acceptable boil-off rates.
MLI consists of multiple layers of reflective material (typically aluminized polyester) separated by low-conductivity spacers. In high vacuum, MLI provides extremely low heat transfer by reflecting radiant heat. MLI is used in the most demanding cryogenic applications including liquid helium and liquid hydrogen storage where minimal heat leak is critical.
