Overpressure Protection Built Into the System

Every pressure vessel must be protected against exceeding its maximum allowable working pressure, and the code requires pressure-relief devices sized for the worst-case overpressure scenario. We design the relief connections — the nozzles and piping that carry relieving flow — into the vessels and integrate relief valves, rupture discs, or combinations of the two as the service requires.

Sizing the relief path correctly is essential: an undersized relief device cannot protect the vessel, while the relief piping must carry the relieving flow without excessive back pressure. We design the relief nozzles and connections to suit the selected devices and the relieving conditions, coordinating with the overall vessel design.

Rupture discs, relief valves, and other safety devices each have their place. Relief valves reclose after relieving, rupture discs provide fast, full-bore relief and isolation from the process, and the two are sometimes combined. We integrate the appropriate devices and their connections so the protection scheme matches the hazard.
