What Nickel Alloys and Super Alloys Are

Nickel alloys and super alloys are high-performance metallic materials based on nickel, often combined with chromium, molybdenum, copper, or iron. They include Inconel (Ni-Cr-Fe), Incoloy (Ni-Fe-Cr), Hastelloy (Ni-Mo-Cr), Monel (Ni-Cu), and proprietary alloys such as Alloy 20. They are selected when stainless steel cannot withstand the service.

Why Nickel Alloys and Super Alloys Matter

Nickel alloys are required wherever the service exceeds the corrosion or temperature capability of stainless steel — strong acids, hot chlorides, high-temperature oxidation, sulfide stress-cracking, or seawater. Specifying the right nickel alloy is mission-critical to column life and plant uptime.

Frequently Asked Questions About Nickel Alloys and Super Alloys

When the service contains hot chlorides, strong reducing or oxidizing acids (HCl, H2SO4, HF, HNO3), elevated H2S, or operates at high temperature. Nickel alloys also offer better high-temperature creep resistance.
Inconel 625 is a solid-solution-strengthened alloy with excellent corrosion resistance and good high-temperature strength. Inconel 718 is precipitation-hardened for higher mechanical strength but with lower corrosion resistance and weldability than 625.
Selection depends on concentration and temperature. For dilute hot H2SO4, Alloy 20 is common; for stronger acid, Hastelloy C-276 or C-2000 is preferred; for very concentrated cold acid, carbon steel is sometimes acceptable.
We hold ASME Section IX qualifications for GTAW and SMAW on Inconel 625, 600, Incoloy 800, Hastelloy C-276/C-22/C-2000, Monel 400, and Alloy 20, with matching consumables (ENiCrMo-3, ENiCrMo-4, etc.).
Yes. We routinely fabricate carbon-steel-backed columns with explosively bonded or roll-bonded Inconel, Incoloy, Hastelloy, or Monel cladding — combining the cost of carbon steel with the corrosion resistance of the nickel alloy.
