Nickel alloy cryogenic pressure vessels utilize specialized nickel-based alloys selected for unique properties including ultra-low thermal expansion (Invar), superior corrosion resistance (Monel), and high-temperature/cryogenic performance (Inconel). These materials address specialized requirements beyond the capabilities of stainless steel or aluminum.
Nickel alloys provide specialized solutions for demanding cryogenic applications. Invar’s near-zero thermal expansion is critical for precision applications and LNG containment systems. Monel’s corrosion resistance suits aggressive environments. Inconel provides strength across extreme temperature ranges from cryogenic to high temperature.
Common applications include:
At Roben, Mfg, Inc., we offer comprehensive options including:
Our cryogenic pressure vessels are designed and manufactured in accordance with stringent industry standards:
Invar (36% nickel-iron alloy) has an extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion—about 1/10th that of stainless steel. This property is critical for LNG membrane containment systems where the containment barrier must accommodate the -260°F temperature differential without excessive thermal stress. Invar membranes remain dimensionally stable during cool-down and warm-up cycles.
Monel (nickel-copper alloy) is specified when superior corrosion resistance is required in cryogenic environments. It excels in seawater and marine atmospheres, hydrofluoric acid environments, and applications requiring the combination of cryogenic properties and corrosion resistance. Monel maintains excellent impact properties at cryogenic temperatures.
Inconel alloys maintain excellent mechanical properties across an extreme temperature range from cryogenic to over 2000°F. This makes Inconel ideal for applications involving temperature cycling or where a single material must perform across a wide temperature range. Inconel 625 is commonly specified for demanding cryogenic applications.
