What Monel Are

Monel is a family of nickel-copper alloys (approximately 67% Ni, 30% Cu) developed for service in highly corrosive environments — particularly hydrofluoric acid (HF), seawater, and reducing acids. The most common grades are Monel 400 (UNS N04400) and the precipitation-hardened Monel K-500 (UNS N05500).

Why Monel Matter

Monel is the industry standard for HF acid service in alkylation units, and is widely used in seawater handling, brine service, and reducing-environment chemical processing. Stainless steels and most other alloys cannot withstand HF service; Monel is the proven solution.

<strong>1. What is Monel and where is it used?</strong>

Monel is a nickel-copper alloy (67Ni-30Cu) used in HF acid service, seawater, brines, and reducing chemical environments where stainless steels cannot survive. It is the standard material for HF alkylation units in refineries.

<strong>2. What is the difference between Monel 400 and K-500?</strong>

Monel 400 is the workhorse grade — solid-solution strengthened, good corrosion resistance, weldable. K-500 is precipitation-hardened with 2.7% Al and 0.6% Ti, providing higher mechanical strength but with reduced weldability and a heat-treatment requirement.

<strong>3. Why is Monel used for HF acid service?</strong>

Hydrofluoric acid attacks most metals, but Monel's nickel-copper composition forms a passive fluoride film that resists attack. It is the only practical material for HF alkylation reactors, settlers, and fractionators.

<strong>4. What welding process does Roben Mfg. use on Monel columns?</strong>

GTAW (TIG) for root passes and clean welds, SMAW (stick) for fill, with matching ENiCu-7 (SMAW) or ERNiCu-7 (GTAW) filler metals. All procedures are qualified per ASME IX.

5. Can Monel columns be ASME-stamped?

Yes. Monel 400 is an ASME VIII Div. 1 approved material. Roben fabricates Monel columns with U-stamp, National Board registration, and PED/CRN as required.
