Roben, Mfg., Inc. specializes in the custom engineering and fabrication of ladders / platforms / handrails for chemical, fine chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, defense, and power-generation industries. Every project is designed to ASME Section VIII Division 1 (with optional Division 2), is National Board registered, complies with the European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU) for CE marking, and is registered under the Canadian Registration Number (CRN) system for all Canadian provinces.

What Ladders / Platforms / Handrails Are

Ladders, platforms, and handrails are the structural access systems that allow safe operator and maintenance access to elevations on columns, towers, tanks, and pressure vessels. They include caged ladders, ship's stairs, intermediate platforms, top-head platforms, manway platforms, instrument platforms, and code-compliant handrails and toe plates.

Why Ladders / Platforms / Handrails Matter

Safe, OSHA-compliant access is required wherever operators, instrumentation, sample points, manways, valves, or maintenance points are located above grade. Engineered access systems are essential to operability, inspection access, regulatory compliance, and worker safety.

Ladders / Platforms / Handrails — Specifications and Capabilities

  • Ladders: Caged, with rest platforms every 30 ft per OSHA 1910.27, or ship's stairs / alternating-tread stairs
  • Platforms: Galvanized or painted carbon steel, 304/316L stainless steel for corrosive environments, FRP for chemical service
  • Handrails: Top rail at 42 in., mid-rail, 4 in. toe plate per OSHA 1910.29
  • Decking: Bar grating, plate flooring, or anti-slip plate as specified
  • Loadings: Designed to AISC, OSHA, with full FEA when required

Certifications and Codes

  • ASME Section VIII Division 2 — available on request
  • National Board registration — R-stamp
  • PED 2014/68/EU — CE marking with Notified Body coordination
  • CRN — registered for all Canadian provinces
  • NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 — sour-service compliance
  • AWS D1.1 / ASME Section IX — qualified welding procedures and welders

Frequently Asked Questions About Ladders / Platforms / Handrails

Yes. All access systems we fabricate meet OSHA 1910.23 (walking-working surfaces), 1910.27 (fixed ladders), and 1910.29 (handrails and stairs). Loadings, geometry, and finishes meet or exceed code.
Hot-dip galvanized, prime-and-paint per project specification (epoxy, urethane, IOZ), 304/316L stainless steel for clean or corrosive service, or FRP for chemical environments.
Yes. We fabricate the brackets, clips, and pad-eyes during vessel fabrication, then ship the platforms as bolt-on or weld-on assemblies. This avoids field-fit issues and reduces site labor.
Standard platforms are designed to 100 psf live load with 1,000 lb concentrated load per AISC and OSHA. Higher loadings (maintenance lifts, instrument cabinets) are designed to project specification with FEA verification.
Yes. We routinely integrate cable tray supports, conduit penetrations, junction-box mounts, and dedicated instrument stands into platform fabrications. Coordinate the I/E layout with us before fabrication for the cleanest install.
