What Inconel, Incoloy, Alloy 20 & Nickel Are

Inconel is a family of nickel-chromium-iron alloys (600, 601, 625, 718, 825) for high-temperature and corrosion service. Incoloy is the iron-rich cousin (800, 800H, 825) for high-temperature and sulfide-stress-cracking resistance. Alloy 20 (UNS N08020) is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy specifically engineered for sulfuric acid service. Pure nickel (Nickel 200/201) is used for caustic and high-purity service.

Why Inconel, Incoloy, Alloy 20 & Nickel Matter

Each of these alloys has a primary application: Inconel 600/625 for high-temperature and saltwater service; Incoloy 800/825 for sulfide-stress and high-temperature creep service; Alloy 20 for sulfuric acid plants and pickling service; Nickel 200 for hot caustic service. Frequently Asked Questions About Inconel, Incoloy, Alloy 20 & Nickel

Inconel 625 is the broader-service nickel-base alloy with the best high-temperature strength and broad corrosion resistance. Incoloy 825 is more economical (higher iron content) and is preferred for sulfuric acid and sulfide-stress-cracking service where its more limited capability is sufficient.
Alloy 20 (UNS N08020) is engineered for sulfuric acid service and is widely used in sulfuric acid plants, pickling lines, and chemical reactors handling dilute-to-medium-concentration H2SO4 at moderate temperatures.
Pure nickel is the standard for hot concentrated caustic (NaOH/KOH) service and for high-purity chemical service where copper or iron contamination cannot be tolerated. Nickel 201 (low-carbon) is preferred for service above 600 °F to avoid graphitization.
Incoloy 800 is the standard grade. 800H has tighter chemistry control (carbon, aluminum, titanium) and a coarser grain structure for improved high-temperature creep resistance. 800HT extends this further. Use 800H/HT for service above 1100 °F.
