What Hastelloy C-276, C2000, C-22 Are

Hastelloy is a family of nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloys with outstanding resistance to a wide range of corrosive media, especially mixed acids and hot chlorides. The C-family — C-276, C-22, C-2000 — represents the most widely used grades in chemical and petrochemical service.

Why Hastelloy C-276, C2000, C-22 Matter

When a process contains mixed oxidizing and reducing acids, hot chlorides, wet chlorine, or hypochlorites, Hastelloy is often the only practical material. It is used in flue-gas desulfurization (FGD), nuclear waste handling, pharmaceutical reactors, and chemical synthesis where corrosion control is paramount.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hastelloy C-276, C2000, C-22

C-276 is the original C-family alloy with broad mixed-acid resistance. C-22 has higher chromium for better oxidizing-acid (nitric, ferric chloride) resistance. C-2000 has the best all-around performance, including improved resistance to sulfuric acid and hot chlorides.
Flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) absorbers, pharmaceutical reactors with mixed acids, hypochlorite handling, hot chloride brines, wet chlorine, organic chloride processes, and nuclear waste handling.
Hastelloy is typically 6–10× the cost of 316L. For most services, clad construction (Hastelloy-clad steel) provides the corrosion performance at a fraction of the solid-alloy cost.
GTAW for root and thin sections, SMAW or GTAW for fill, with matching ENiCrMo-4 / ERNiCrMo-4 (C-276), ENiCrMo-10 (C-22), or matching consumables. ASME Section IX qualifications are in place for all C-family grades.
Both. Solid-Hastelloy columns for the most demanding services (typically smaller diameters), or Hastelloy-clad steel for larger columns where the cost premium of solid alloy is prohibitive.
