Glass-Lined Steel Agitated Vessels

Glass-lined agitated vessels combine the structural strength of steel with the corrosion resistance and cleanability of borosilicate glass lining. These vessels provide exceptional resistance to acids and corrosives while offering a non-contaminating, easily cleaned surface ideal for pharmaceutical, chemical, and food processing applications.

Why Choose Glass-Lined Steel for Agitated Vessels?

Glass-lined vessels are specified when process requirements demand both excellent corrosion resistance and product purity. The glass surface resists most acids (except HF and hot phosphoric), provides no metallic contamination, and cleans easily for batch-to-batch purity. Glass-lined construction offers these benefits at lower cost than solid exotic alloys.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What chemicals can glass-lined vessels handle?

Glass lining resists most acids including HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, and organic acids at various concentrations and temperatures. Exceptions include hydrofluoric acid and hot concentrated phosphoric acid that attack glass. Strong caustics at elevated temperatures also degrade glass. We provide chemical resistance guidance for specific applications.

What agitator designs are compatible with glass lining?

Glass-lined vessels use glass-covered agitators with specially designed blades and shafts. Retreat blade, anchor, and turbine configurations are common. Agitator design prevents glass damage from excessive stress or thermal shock. Bottom-entry magnetic drives eliminate the shaft seal penetration that can be problematic with glass lining.

What happens if the glass lining is damaged?

Minor glass damage can often be repaired using specialized tantalum plugs or repair compounds. Significant damage may require vessel reglazing or replacement. Proper operation avoiding thermal shock, mechanical impact, and incompatible chemicals prevents most damage. Inspection programs detect damage before it causes process problems.
