Roben, Mfg., Inc. specializes in the custom engineering and fabrication of fractionators for chemical, fine chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, defense, and power-generation industries. Every project is designed to ASME Section VIII Division 1 (with optional Division 2), is National Board registered, complies with the European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU) for CE marking, and is registered under the Canadian Registration Number (CRN) system for all Canadian provinces.

What Fractionators Are

A fractionator is a multi-stage distillation column that separates a feedstock into multiple product streams (fractions) based on boiling point ranges. Fractionators are the largest and tallest distillation columns in petrochemical and refining service, separating crude oil into LPG, naphtha, kerosene, diesel, gas oil, and residue, or natural gas liquids into ethane, propane, butane, and gasoline-range products.

Why Fractionators Matter

Fractionators are the central separation unit in atmospheric and vacuum crude distillation, NGL fractionation trains, FCC main fractionators, and ethylene plant primary fractionators. The fractionator's diameter, height, internals, and metallurgy determine refinery yields, gas plant economics, and downstream product specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fractionators

A fractionator is a multi-stage distillation column that separates a feed into more than two product fractions based on boiling-point ranges. Side draws at multiple elevations allow simultaneous recovery of multiple cuts.
A simple distillation column produces one overhead and one bottoms product. A fractionator produces multiple side cuts plus overhead and bottoms — for example, an atmospheric crude column produces LPG/naphtha overhead, kerosene/diesel/gas oil side cuts, and reduced crude bottoms.
For sour service (H2S-containing streams), we use HIC-resistant carbon steel, type 410S/405 or 11–13Cr stainless cladding, Duplex stainless, or Inconel/Incoloy alloys. Material selection follows NACE MR0175/ISO 15156.
Yes. We design and fabricate fractionators with multiple side draws, pumparound circuits, side strippers, and intercoolers as required by the process. Design includes nozzle layout, distributor design, and structural support for external equipment.
Fractionators are designed and fabricated to ASME VIII Div. 1 (and Div. 2 on request), with National Board, PED, and CRN registration as required by the project.
