What Exhaust Stacks Are

An exhaust stack is a tall, vertical structure that vents combustion gases, process emissions, or scrubbed exhaust streams to the atmosphere at a sufficient height to ensure dispersion, regulatory compliance, and worker safety. Industrial exhaust stacks include process vents, flue-gas stacks, FCC regenerator stacks, gas-turbine exhaust stacks, and flare stacks.

Why Exhaust Stacks Matter

Exhaust stacks are required wherever combustion or process gases must be discharged to atmosphere — power plants, refineries, chemical plants, incinerators, and industrial boilers. Stack height, diameter, and metallurgy are dictated by emissions dispersion modeling, applicable air-quality regulations, and the chemistry of the exhaust stream.

Frequently Asked Questions About Exhaust Stacks

Carbon steel is most common, with internal coatings or refractory lining for hot or corrosive service. 304/316L stainless steel is used for sulfur-rich or chloride-bearing flue gas. FRP and alloy linings are used for acid-condensing services.
Stacks are self-supporting (free-standing), guyed (with cables), or supported by an external structural tower or derrick. Roben designs the foundation, anchor bolts, and base ring as part of the package.
We perform wind-load and vortex-shedding calculations per ASCE 7, CICIND, or ASME STS-1. FEA verifies the dynamic response, and helical strakes or tuned mass dampers are added when vortex shedding is a concern.
Yes. We supply caged ladders, intermediate platforms, top platforms with handrails, mounting brackets for aviation obstruction lighting, and lightning protection per OSHA and FAA requirements.
Stacks are designed to ASME STS-1 (Steel Stacks), ASCE 7, AISC 360, or CICIND as required, with all welding to AWS D1.1 or ASME Section IX. Pressure-rated stacks (such as flare stacks) carry the ASME U-stamp where applicable.
