What Distillation Columns Are

A distillation column is a vertical pressure vessel used to separate a mixture of liquids into its individual components based on differences in their boiling points. The column achieves separation through repeated cycles of vaporization and condensation across a series of internal trays or structured/random packing, allowing lighter (more volatile) components to rise to the top while heavier components descend to the bottom.

Frequently Asked Questions About Distillation Columns

A distillation column separates liquid mixtures into individual components by exploiting differences in boiling points. Vapor rises through a series of trays or packing, condensing and re-vaporizing repeatedly. Lighter components reach the top condenser; heavier components collect at the bottom reboiler.
Tray columns use horizontal plates (sieve, valve, or bubble cap) to create vapor-liquid contact and are preferred for high liquid loads, large diameters, and dirty services. Packed columns use random or structured packing for higher efficiency per unit height, lower pressure drop, and applications such as vacuum distillation and heat-sensitive products.
