Roben, Mfg., Inc. specializes in the custom engineering and fabrication of carbon steel heat exchangers for chemical, fine chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, defense, and power-generation industries. Every heat exchanger is designed to ASME Section VIII Division 1 (with optional Division 2), TEMA Class R/C/B, HTRI thermal verification, and is National Board registered. PED 2014/68/EU CE marking and CRN registration for all Canadian provinces are available on request.

What Carbon Steel Heat Exchangers Are

Carbon steel is the workhorse material for heat exchanger shells, channels, baffles, and tubes in non-corrosive and mildly corrosive services. Common grades include SA-516 Grade 70 (pressure plate), SA-105 (forgings), SA-106 Grade B (pipe), SA-179/SA-214 (tubes). Carbon steel offers excellent mechanical properties, weldability, and economics.

Why Carbon Steel Heat Exchangers Matter

When the process and utility sides do not require alloy upgrade, carbon steel delivers the best combination of strength, fabricability, and cost. It is the dominant material for cooling-water service, steam service, hot-oil service, and many refinery and petrochemical streams. Pairing carbon steel with admiralty brass or copper-nickel tubes is common for cooling-water duties.

Carbon Steel Heat Exchangers — Specifications and Capabilities

  • Shell/channel grades: SA-516 Gr 70 (pressure plate), SA-285, SA-455
  • Tube grades: SA-179, SA-192, SA-210 (boiler/heat exchanger tubes), SA-214 (welded)
  • Forgings: SA-105 (≤800 °F), SA-181 Class 70
  • Allowable temperature: –20 °F to +800 °F (with normalized steel) — UG-84 charpy impact for low-temperature service
  • PWHT: Required per UCS-56 above thickness/temperature thresholds

Frequently Asked Questions About Carbon Steel Heat Exchangers

When neither the process side nor the utility side is corrosive — typical services include cooling water (with copper-alloy or stainless tubes), steam, hot oil, refinery hydrocarbon streams without H2S, and most utility duties.
Standard carbon steel (SA-516 Gr 70) is approved to 800 °F. Above 800 °F, low-alloy steels (1¼Cr-½Mo, 2¼Cr-1Mo) or higher-temperature alloys are required to avoid graphitization and creep.
For service below –20 °F, ASME UG-84 charpy impact testing is required. SA-516 Gr 70 normalized passes impact requirements down to –50 °F; SA-350 LF2 is a low-temperature grade certified to –50 °F or lower.
PWHT is required per ASME UCS-56 when nominal thickness exceeds the table values (typically >1¼ in. for P-No. 1 carbon steel). PWHT relieves residual stresses and can improve toughness. Roben performs PWHT in-house.
Admiralty brass (B-111 C44300) and 90/10 copper-nickel for cooling-water service; SA-179/192/210 carbon steel tubes for steam and hot-oil; 304/316L stainless tubes when the tube-side fluid is more aggressive than the shell-side.
