Roben, Mfg., Inc. specializes in the custom engineering and fabrication of c32/c2 splitters for chemical, fine chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, defense, and power-generation industries. Every project is designed to ASME Section VIII Division 1 (with optional Division 2), is National Board registered, complies with the European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU) for CE marking, and is registered under the Canadian Registration Number (CRN) system for all Canadian provinces.

What C32/C2 Splitters Are

A C2 splitter (ethylene-ethane splitter) is a high-purity distillation column that separates ethylene from ethane in olefin plants. A C32 (or C3=) splitter separates propylene from propane. These splitters are among the largest and most demanding distillation columns in industry — running hundreds of feet tall, hundreds of trays, and operating at low temperatures and high pressures to achieve polymer-grade product purity.

Why C32/C2 Splitters Matter

C2 and C32 splitters are critical to ethylene and propylene production for the polyethylene, polypropylene, and chemical-derivative markets. Their height, internals precision, and reflux ratio determine the plant's polymer-grade product purity (≥99.95%) and energy consumption. Tight relative volatility makes these columns engineering-intensive.

C32/C2 Splitters — Specifications and Capabilities

  • Heights: Among the tallest in industry — up to 300 ft / 90 m

Frequently Asked Questions About C32/C2 Splitters

A C2 splitter is a distillation column that separates ethylene from ethane in an olefin plant, producing polymer-grade ethylene (≥99.95% purity). The relative volatility is small, requiring 100+ trays and high reflux ratios.
A C32 splitter (also called a C3 splitter or PP splitter) separates propylene from propane, producing polymer-grade or chemical-grade propylene for downstream polypropylene production.
The relative volatility between ethylene/ethane and propylene/propane is small (close to 1.0), so achieving polymer-grade purity requires a very large number of theoretical stages — translating into 100–200+ trays and column heights up to 300 ft.
Low-temperature carbon steel and 304/316L stainless steel are common. Material selection depends on the operating temperature (typically below 0 °F for C2 splitters) and the mechanical loads on the lower section.
Our fabrication holds tight tolerances on tray flatness, downcomer geometry, and weir height. We perform FEA on the support structure and verify roundness and straightness at multiple elevations during assembly.
