What Austenitic and Duplex Stainless Steel Are

Austenitic stainless steels (304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 347) and duplex stainless steels (2205, 2507 super-duplex) are the most widely used construction materials for columns in chemical, petrochemical, fine chemical, and pharmaceutical service. Austenitic grades offer general corrosion resistance and excellent weldability; duplex grades combine higher strength with stress-corrosion-cracking resistance in chloride-bearing environments.

Why Austenitic and Duplex Stainless Steel Matter

Stainless steel is the default choice for columns in corrosive service, high-purity service, and clean-in-place (CIP) systems. Duplex grades extend stainless steel into more aggressive services — high chlorides, marine, sour gas — at lower cost than nickel alloys.

Frequently Asked Questions About Austenitic and Duplex Stainless Steel

316 contains 2–3% molybdenum, which provides better resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion than 304. 316 is preferred for chloride-bearing or marine services.
Duplex stainless (2205) is preferred when higher strength, better stress-corrosion-cracking resistance, or higher chloride resistance is required at lower cost than 6Mo or nickel alloys. It is widely used in oil and gas, FGD systems, and seawater service.
304L has lower carbon content (≤0.030%), reducing the risk of intergranular corrosion (sensitization) at heat-affected zones in welds. 304L is preferred for welded vessels.
GTAW (TIG) for root passes and tight clearances, SMAW (stick) for fill on heavy sections, and FCAW or GMAW where productivity matters. All procedures are qualified per ASME Section IX.
Standard finish is pickled and passivated externally and internally. Mechanical polishing (Ra 32, 25, 20 µin.) and electropolishing (Ra ≤ 15 µin.) are available for sanitary and high-purity services.
